Access to justice and institutional regendering: The case of the National Prosecution Bureau of Chile.Bárbara Barraza Uribe & María Isabel Salinas - 2021 - Feminist Legal Studies 29 (1):1-21.
In 2017, the National Prosecution Bureau of Chile created the Special Unit for Human Rights, Gender-Based Violence, and Sex Crimes, becoming a milestone for criminal prosecution policies as the first time a state institution in Chile used the term ‘gender-based violence’ explicitly in its title. There was no law in the country that addressed and sanctioned this behaviour—recognising it as a social phenomenon—at the time of the Unit's creation. What does the creation of this new Unit mean for access to (...)

  2. Reference.Barbara Abbott - 2010 - New York: Oxford University Press.
This book presents the most important problems of reference and considers their solution. It presupposes no technical knowledge, presents analyses from first principles, illustrates every stage with examples, and is written with verve and clarity. This is the ideal introduction to reference for students of linguistics and philosophy of language.

  7. What about Plurality? Aristotle’s Discussion of Zeno’s Paradoxes.Barbara M. Sattler - 2021 - Peitho 12 (1):85-106.
While Aristotle provides the crucial testimonies for the paradoxes of motion, topos, and the falling millet seed, surprisingly he shows almost no interest in the paradoxes of plurality. For Plato, by contrast, the plurality paradoxes seem to be the central paradoxes of Zeno and Simplicius is our primary source for those. This paper investigates why the plurality paradoxes are not examined by Aristotle and argues that a close look at the context in which Aristotle discusses Zeno holds the answer to (...)

Causing something to be one way rather than another: Genetic Information, causal specificity and the relevance of linear order.Barbara Osimani - unknown
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to suggest a definition of genetic information by taking into account the debate surrounding it. Particularly, the objections raised by Developmental Systems Theory to Teleosemantic endorsements of the notion of genetic information as well as deflationist approaches which suggest to ascribe the notion of genetic information a heuristic value at most, and to reduce it to that of causality. Design/methodology/approach The paper presents the notion of genetic information through its historical evolution and analyses (...)

The study investigates how the territorial community can influence the individual and social well-being of lesbian, gay, bisexual youth and especially the recognition of their feelings and the construction of their own identity as well as their needs to be socially recognized. This research focuses on the experiences of 30 LGB individuals, with a mean age of 25.07 years, living in urban and rural areas of Southern Italy. Focalized open interviews were conducted, and the Grounded Theory Methodology, supported by the (...)

  21. Le Cercle Rouge Analyse D’Une Œuvre.Barbara Laborde & Julien Servois - 2010 - Vrin.

Varieties of Error and Varieties of Evidence in Scientific Inference, Forthcoming in The British Journal for Philosophy of Science.Barbara Osimani & Juergen Landes - forthcoming - British Journal for Philosophy of Science.
According to the Variety of Evidence Thesis items of evidence from independent lines of investigation are more confirmatory, ceteris paribus, than e.g. replications of analogous studies. This thesis is known to fail Bovens and Hartmann, Claveau. How- ever, the results obtained by the former only concern instruments whose evidence is either fully random or perfectly reliable; instead in Claveau, unreliability is modelled as deterministic bias. In both cases, the unreliable instrument delivers totally irrelevant information. We present a model which formalises (...)

Finitely generated ideals in directed commutative bck-algebra.Barbara Wozniakowska - 1980 - Bulletin of the Section of Logic 9 (4):166-169.
This main aim of this paper is to prove that in a direct commutative BCK-algebra an ideal I is nitely generated if and only if I is a principal ideal. This result generalizes the result obtained by E. Y. Deeba in [2]. We also give an answer to the question posed by E. Y. Deeba in [1]: for what class of BCK-algebras is every Noetherian algebra a principal ideal algebra ?

    Why We Should Do Without Concepts.Barbara C. Malt - 2010 - Mind and Language 25 (5):622-633.
Machery (2009) has proposed that the notion of ‘concept’ ought to be eliminated from the theoretical vocabulary of psychology. I raise three questions about his argument: (1) Is there a meaningful distinction between concepts and background knowledge? (2) Do we need to discard the hybrid view? (3) Are there really categories of things in the world that are the basis for concepts? Although I argue that the answer to all three is ‘no’, I agree with Machery's conclusion that seeking a (...)

This books gleans insight from philosophical scholarship that can help respond to the challenges that white complicity creates for pedagogy.

The Locus of Agency in Extended Cognitive Systems.Barbara Tomczyk - 2024 - Journal for General Philosophy of Science / Zeitschrift für Allgemeine Wissenschaftstheorie 55 (4):579-604.
The increasing popularity of artificial cognitive enhancements raises the issue of their impact on the agent’s personal autonomy, and issues pertaining to how the latter is to be secured. The extended mind thesis implies that mental states responsible for autonomous action can be partly constituted by the workings of cognitive artifacts themselves, and the question then arises of whether this commits one to embracing an extended agent thesis. My answer is negative. After briefly presenting the main accounts on the conditions (...)

    Agape in Feminist Ethics.Barbara Hilkert Andolsen - 1981 - Journal of Religious Ethics 9 (1):69 - 83.
The role of agape in Christian ethics has been a major concern for twentieth century ethicists. In America, the dominant ethical position has stressed other-regard--often pressed to the point of significant personal sacrifice--as the content of agape. Feminist ethicists are now criticizing an exclusive emphasis on other-regard. They are stressing the need for a healthy self-regard and hence they are exploring mutuality as the most appropriate image of Christian love.

Two elements of corporate governance—the strength of ethical executive leadership and the internal audit function (IAF hereafter)—provide guidance to accounting managers making decisions involving uncertainty. We examine the joint effect of these two factors, manipulated at two levels (strong, weak), in an experiment in which accounting professionals decide whether to book a questionable journal entry (i.e., a journal entry for which a reasonable business case can be made but there is no supporting documentation). We find that ethical leadership and the (...)

(1 other version)Elegy to an Oz Republic: First Steps in a Ceremony of Invocation towards Reconciliation.Barbara Bolt - 2015 - Cultural Studies Review 21 (2).
In 2012 the author completed a series of drawings that, while figurative in form, were structurally based on and derived their inspiration from Robert Motherwell’s abstract series, Elegies to the Spanish Republic. This wholesale 'borrowing', 'quotation' and 'citation' raises the questions addressed in this article. What does it mean to engage in acts of appropriation now? And, more importantly, can such acts of appropriation draw on the spirit of the 'original' work to make a difference?

    O erro de aristóteles na biologia humana.Barbara Botter - 2016 - Synesis 8 (1):35-53.

Kommentar zu Nietzsches Unzeitgemässen Betrachtungen: I. David Strauss der Bekenner und der Schriftsteller ; II. Vom Nutzen und Nachtheil der Historie für das Leben.Barbara Neymeyr - 2020 - Boston: De Gruyter.
